In Memory

It is with much sadness that I inform you of the passing of retired member Brother Marvin Dowdall in his 69th year. Brother Dowdall was initiated in Local 894 on February 2, 1972 and retired on March 31, 2007. He leaves us with great memories and we share the loss and sorrow with his family, relatives and friends. Brother Dowdall will be dearly missed but not forgotten by all who had the opportunity to know and work with him.

Local 894 Elections

On behalf of the membership I wish to thank Election Judge Don MacKinnon and his assistants Jan Anderson, Bob Taylor, Adam Graham and Tony MacMullin for their excellent management duties they performed during the Election of Officers on June 26, 2008. In addition I also wish to congratulate the new officers and also thank the previous administration for the valuable time and effort they gave to Local 894 during the last three years. Your efforts were truly recognized and appreciated by all.

Harley Davidson Draw

The winner of the Local 894 Harley Davidson draw on Friday, June 13th, 2008 was Local 894 member Kevin Crowley. We send our best congratulations and wish him many years of Harley Davidson rides and enjoyment.

Local 894 Golf Tournament

Thanks to Tammy and the committee, Gerry Scratch, Paul Robitaille, Brian Pomeroy and Adam Graham for organizing another great golf tournament. The course at Wolf run Golf Club was in excellent condition and the weather was perfect for the 97 golfers who enjoyed the day’s events. Top foursome: Mike Heffernan, Mark Little, Dan Mahoney, Pat Ralph. Closest to the pin: Andy Clark, Lynn Scratch. Closest to the pin #2 children’s charity: Kelly Stewart. Putting contest: Scott Young. The longest drive: Ladies Kelly Stewart, Men: Pat Ralph. Kelly and Pat are the first recipients to receive the Longest Drive trophy donated by Debbie Dixon in memory of her late husband and Local 894 member Barry Dixon. Every year two new recipients will have their names added.

Local 894 Picnic

Saturday, August 9th at Cedar Park, Bowmanville (same as last year) Please notify the office by returning the flyer with required information by August 6th to receive your tickets. Tickets will not be available at the park.

Golf Tournament - Carpenters' Local 397

A draw to send a foursome to this charity fundraising tournament will take place at the July 24th General Meeting. Tournament is Saturday, July 26, 2008 @ Ashbrook Golf Course, Port Hope. Please enter your name at the office for the draw or at the beginning of the General Meeting on July 24, 2008.

Golf Tournament - Black & McDonald & Crossby Dewar

A draw to send a foursome to this Charity Tournament in support of Herizon House, a shelter in Ajax for abused women and children. Location: Cherry Downs Golf & Country Club, Pickering, Ontario. Notice of Motion
To add the following to the Local 894 Bylaws

“In order for a member to be an eligible candidate in the Local 894 Election of Officers the member must attend seven (7) of the twelve (12) General Meetings immediately prior to nominations. Attendance must be verified with the member’s signature in the General Meeting attendance registration book.”

Van Bots (General Contractor) has started work on the new Automotive Wind Tunnel project at Durham College, Simcoe St. North but the electrical contract has not been awarded yet. The information provided to me has indicated an announcement for a considerable size addition to the facilities at Durham College Whitby Campus (trade school) is near. Lancor electric has the contract for the Loblaws project in Peterborough which is just beginning. I have received information indicating the safe storage for Units 2 & 3 at OPG Pickering will begin soon.
